Remodels

Dumpster for kitchen and bathroom remodel debris

Louisville Metro tells homeowners to plan for debris before demolition starts. Its junk and bulk trash page is blunt: construction and demolition debris is banned by ordinance from garbage and large item collection, and crews mark it and leave a notice.

Roll-off container holding old oak cabinet doors, drywall and countertop pieces

Typical sizes

Bathroom

Tub or shower surround, vanity, toilet, tile and backer board usually fit a 10-yard container. Tile and mortar are heavy for their size.

Kitchen

Cabinets, countertops, a soffit or two and the old floor often need 15 to 20 yards. Add a wall coming down and plan on the larger one.

Older Louisville houses weigh more

Houses built before drywall became common often have plaster on wood lath behind the walls. Plaster is dense and dusty, and a few rooms of it can take a big share of a weight allowance. Mention it on the call.

Vinyl floor tile in an older home may contain asbestos. Don't break suspect tile to make it fit. HazBin takes household asbestos floor tile in small amounts, under 25 pounds; anything beyond that is a job for a licensed specialist.

A remodel timeline that keeps the container useful

  1. Book before demo day

Have the container on site before the first cabinet comes off the wall.

  2. Protect the driveway

Ask for boards under the rails. Placement tips.

  3. Load flat and tight

Doors and panels flat on the floor, broken pieces in the gaps.

  4. Keep leftovers separate

Adhesives, solvents and leftover oil-based finish go to HazBin, not the container.

Remodel questions

Can I take remodel debris to the Waste Reduction Center myself?

Yes, lumber, drywall and flooring are accepted at the Waste Reduction Center on Meriwether Avenue for a charge by vehicle size. It refuses shingles, concrete and brick. A container saves the trips.

My contractor is doing the work. Do I still need a dumpster?

Ask first. Some contractors bring their own container or haul debris themselves; if yours doesn't, renting one keeps the job moving.

Book the container while it's on your mind

Say what you're clearing out, where the dumpster can sit and which day suits you. By the end of the conversation you'll know the container, the delivery morning and what you'd pay.
