Cleanouts
Dumpster for a garage, basement or attic cleanout
Years of stored things fill space fast but weigh little. For most Louisville cleanouts the question is how many cubic yards, not how many tons.
Phone hours: Monday–Saturday 8am–8pm, Sunday 8am–1pm ET

Sizing a cleanout
A single-car garage or a basement with a few years of boxes, broken chairs and an old sofa usually fits a 15-yard container. A two-car garage packed to the rafters, or an attic plus a basement, leans toward 20. Whole-house cleanouts are on the estate page.
Break furniture down where you can and lay flat things flat. Air pockets are what fill a container early.
Pull these out before you start throwing
- Old paint, stains and solvents: oil-based ones go to HazBin; latex can be dried out and bagged for the garbage.
- Grill and camping propane tanks, pool chemicals, car batteries and lawn chemicals: also HazBin.
- A dead freezer, fridge or dehumidifier: anything with Freon goes to the Waste Reduction Center.
- Tires and old TVs or computers: the Waste Reduction Center takes a few per day from households.
- Anything worth selling or giving away. Metro's own advice is to try giving usable items away first.
Stairs, alleys and the walk to the container
Carrying a basement up the stairs is slower than filling a box, so ask for the container as near the door you'll use as the truck can reach. A rear door on the container saves lifting a dresser over a four-foot wall.
Many older Louisville garages open onto an alley. An alley is public right-of-way, the same as a street, so a container that blocks one falls under the Metro permit rather than your driveway.

Cleanout questions
Why not use Metro's Large Item Pickup instead?
You can for a few pieces. Large Item Pickup takes up to four large items a week, by appointment, inside the Urban Services District only, and no bagged or boxed small items. A full garage outgrows that quickly.
How long do people keep a container for a cleanout?
A weekend to a week is common. Ask how many days the quote includes and what an extra day costs.
Book the container while it's on your mind
Say what you're clearing out, where the dumpster can sit and which day suits you. By the end of the conversation you'll know the container, the delivery morning and what you'd pay.
