Sell, donate and give away what's still useful. It's lighter on the container and the budget.
About a week out
Book the dumpster for the last days before the movers come, with a day or two of slack.
Moving week
Clear one room at a time, leaving a path for the movers and the furniture you're keeping.
After the movers leave
Sweep the last pieces in and call for pickup before the keys change hands.
Renters and landlords
If you rent, ask the landlord or property manager before booking. Apartment lots often have rules about where a truck can stop and how long a container can stand.
Landlords turning over a unit after a tenant leaves usually need one container for the furniture, mattresses and bagged junk left behind. Ask the company how it handles mattresses, as some charge extra for them.
City pickup has limits
Metro's Large Item Pickup handles up to four large items a week, by appointment, and only inside the Urban Services District. Small cities have their own versions: St. Matthews allows one large item a week. See St. Matthews.
Moving questions
What size do people use for a move-out?
A 15 or 20-yard container covers most apartments and smaller houses. A full house with a garage and attic may need 30.
Can the container stay after I've moved out?
That's between you and the new owner or landlord. It's simpler to have it collected before closing.
