Estate cleanouts
Dumpster for an estate cleanout
Clearing the home of someone you've lost is hard work, and it usually can't be done in a weekend. Plan the container around the family's pace, not the other way round.
Phone hours: Monday–Saturday 8am–8pm, Sunday 8am–1pm ET

Sort before anything goes in
Walk the house first with the people who should have a say. Set aside one room, or one corner of the garage, as the keep pile, and don't load the container until everyone has been through.
Check drawers, books, coat pockets and the backs of closets for papers: deeds, titles, insurance policies, photos and letters turn up in odd places.
Things to set aside in an older home
- Cans of old paint, varnish, pesticides and pool chemicals in the garage or basement: take them to HazBin on Grade Lane.
- Mercury thermometers and old thermostats: also HazBin.
- Old refrigerators, freezers and window air conditioners: the Waste Reduction Center handles items with Freon.
- Usable furniture and household goods: charities and neighbors may want them before the container does.
Size and time
A full house often needs a 30-yard container or a swap partway through. Ask for a longer rental period at the start, rather than rushing to beat a pickup date.
If the house is being sold, check with the agent about when the container should be gone. Buyers often walk through before the work is finished.

Book the container while it's on your mind
Say what you're clearing out, where the dumpster can sit and which day suits you. By the end of the conversation you'll know the container, the delivery morning and what you'd pay.
